My name is Gabriel de los Santos, I live in Kearny, New Jersey and I’m in my senior year of high school. My parents are from the Dominican Republic but I was born in Livingston NJ.

I was born weighing just 1 pound when my mother was just 26 weeks pregnant, which I had to spend 3 months in an incubator at the hospital in the NICU .The nurses played music for me so that I would not hear the sound of the machines all day, so I am sure that from that moment my passion for music began. Today I am 18 years old and I have studied in a music conservatory since I was nine years old where I have learned classical music and I also learned how to sing in different languages. I have had the great opportunity to sing in different shows such as the voice kids (Spanish version USA televised on Telemundo), Showtime at the Apollo with Mr. Steve Harvey, I have won the amateur night at the Apollo Theater more than 5 times. I was on Broadway world’s second season of Next On Stage competition where I was one of the 3 finalists. This year I was also accepted for acapella academy which was founded by the creator of the famous acapella group “Pentatonix”.I was also a participant on Dominicana Got Talent.
For me music is one of the most important things in my life and that is why I want to fight to achieve my dream of become a Great singer. I was given a second chance at life and I know that I was given that opportunity to achieve my dreams and to spread the message to the world that you can do anything no matter the obstacles put in your path!

The Governor’s Awards in Arts Education began in 1980 to promote awareness and appreciation of the arts, recognizing the creativity, talent and leadership of the award winners. Each year, awards are presented to approximately 20 educators and 80 students. National and statewide organizations select the students for their exemplary work in creative writing, speech, dance, music, theatre and visual arts and the leaders for their exceptional commitment and contribution to arts education. The program also recognizes arts educators and arts education advocates, whose leadership has helped nurture the development of students in the arts across the state.
