The George DiBuono Recognition Award
Established to honor former President, George DiBouno, whose dedication to arts education in New Jersey was marked by a realization of the power of leadership in education to move the arts to the forefront. This award is for those who are “within” the field of education, but not Art Educators.
As a Supervisor of the Art Department in East Brunswick Public Schools, Mr. John Perillo, not only took on the expected responsibility of evaluating teacher performance, budgeting and other administrative tasks; he also demonstrated a strong support of visual arts education by going above the norm and standing up for its importance within the district.
Mr. Perillo developed a strong rapport with his teacher as he took the time to listen and get to know each of them. His interpersonal skills of approachability and good communication allowed us to feel comfortable, appreciated and encouraged. Furthermore, he used his understanding of people and what makes them tick to foster their growth in leadership roles. For instance, Mr. Perillo encouraged me to present at conference for the first time 3 years ago and became more involved with Arts Advocacy on the town and state levels. Mr. Perillo’s Service as Supervisor of the Arts in East Brunswick Public Schools exemplifies the type of support that the George DiBuono Recognition Awards represents.
