Mark Escarrilla has been attending Deptford Township School District since pre-K. He has been playing the alto saxophone since 4th grade, playing in both jazz and concert bands. During his high school career, he made the All-South Jersey Concert Band in 10th grade, the All-South Jersey Jazz Band in 9th and 11th grade, and the All-State Jazz Band in 11th grade. As the 1st alto saxophonist in the Deptford Jazz Ensemble, he and the ensemble achieved 4th place in the 2019 Berkeley High School Jazz Festival and 2nd place in the 2020 National Jazz Festival in Philadelphia. Mark is extremely grateful for his teachers; Michael Armstrong and Carl Cox, and Tony Salicandro; for guiding him to the level of proficiency he is at today.

The Governor’s Awards in Arts Education began in 1980 to promote awareness and appreciation of the arts, recognizing the creativity, talent and leadership of the award winners. Each year, awards are presented to approximately 20 educators and 80 students. National and statewide organizations select the students for their exemplary work in creative writing, speech, dance, music, theatre and visual arts and the leaders for their exceptional commitment and contribution to arts education. The program also recognizes arts educators and arts education advocates, whose leadership has helped nurture the development of students in the arts across the state.

The Governor’s Awards event is a partnership of the Arts Ed NJ, the Department of Education, Art Pride New Jersey Foundation, the Department of State and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.
