Meghna Das, 17, from Edison, NJ, has been studying music since she was 3, including Indian and western classical voice, opera, jazz voice, broadway, classical and jazz guitar, and classical and jazz piano. She attended Pre-college at Manhattan School of Music for classical and jazz voice. Since 2015, she has performed with CJMEA Regions, ACDA National, All Eastern, All State and NJMEA All State Choirs. She was a member of her high school jazz band on vocals and guitar and is a member of her school Chamber Choir. She is passionate about musical theater and has performed lead roles in productions at her school and NJ School of Dramatic Arts. She was named a 2021 National YoungArts Foundation Finalist in Popular Voice and received the Merit Winner award for songwriting in the 2020 YoungArts Competition. She was selected into Grammy Camp 2020 for Vocal Performance, NYU Contemporary Voice Workshop 2020, and NYU Songwriting Intensive 2020. She won 2nd place in the 2018 NJ Shout Down Drugs songwriting contest, 1st in the 2019 NATS NJ Doris Lenz competition, 1st in the 2020 NATS NY, and 2nd in the 2021 NATS Eastern Competition. She was also recognized as a semi-finalist for the 2020 Hal Leonard vocal competition in the musical theater category and received the best soloist recognition for Blues/Pop/Rock Voice in the Downbeat Magazine 2021 Competition. Meghna performs in benefit concerts to raise funds for noble causes and spreads the message of love, hope and humanity through music.

The Governor’s Awards in Arts Education began in 1980 to promote awareness and appreciation of the arts, recognizing the creativity, talent and leadership of the award winners. Each year, awards are presented to approximately 20 educators and 80 students. National and statewide organizations select the students for their exemplary work in creative writing, speech, dance, music, theatre and visual arts and the leaders for their exceptional commitment and contribution to arts education. The program also recognizes arts educators and arts education advocates, whose leadership has helped nurture the development of students in the arts across the state.

The Governor’s Awards event is a partnership of the Arts Ed NJ, the Department of Education, Art Pride New Jersey Foundation, the Department of State and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. The cooperating organizations, award sponsors and individual members of the planning council dedicate their time to make sure that excellence in the arts is rewarded, and work tirelessly throughout the year to plan this special event. The Governor's Awards in Arts Education ceremony are a major collaborative effort of the arts, education and state government.
