NJ Students and Leaders to be Honored at the 2021 Governor’s Awards in Arts Education

TRENTON — 19 March 2021

A date has been announced for the 2021 New Jersey Governor’s Awards in Arts Education. The prestigious event is hailed as the highest honor in arts education in the state. These awards honor excellence, promoting awareness and appreciation of the arts education.

This event recognizes 100 students and 20 adult leaders who have demonstrated excellence in and dedication to arts education. Across the country, the Governor’s Awards programs share similar goals; however, New Jersey sets itself apart. New Jersey students are the ultimate beneficiaries of the Governor’s Awards in Arts Education and this is what makes us unique. We applaud and acknowledge their talents, effort, dedication and passion for excellence. An annual award ceremony -free and open to the public – is held every year to honor award recipients.

The awards will take place virtually on May 22nd at 5pm. The students award winners will perform throughout the ceremony, award winners’ names will be read by past award winners, and a presentation of award-winning artwork will be shown.

For details about the upcoming virtual event please visit www.njgaae.org and follow us on twitter @NJGAAE and Instagram @NJGovAwardsArtsEd.

This program is made possible in part by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, a founding agency of Arts Ed NJ. The Governor’s Awards event is a partnership of the Arts Ed NJ, the Department of Education, Art Pride New Jersey Foundation, the Department of State and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. Additional support is provided by: Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics; Art Educators of New Jersey; Art Administrators of New Jersey; Dance New Jersey; New Jersey Council of Teachers of English; New Jersey Speech and Debate League; New Jersey Music Educators Association; New Jersey Performing Arts Center; Speech and Theatre Association of New Jersey, and New Jersey Thespians.

The Governor’s Awards in Arts Education began in 1980 to promote awareness and appreciation of the arts, recognizing the creativity, talent and leadership of the award winners. Each year, awards are presented to approximately 20 educators and 80 students. National and statewide organizations select the students for their exemplary work in creative writing, speech, dance, music, theatre and visual arts and the leaders for their exceptional commitment and contribution to arts education. The program also recognizes arts educators and arts education advocates, whose leadership has helped nurture the development of students in the arts across the state.
